Data Centre Rack and Stack Services in Singapore

GlobalITN provides scoped rack-and-stack installation for organisations deploying or refreshing servers, storage and network equipment in a Singapore data centre. The work starts with an approved equipment schedule, rack layout and site-readiness check, then follows the customer’s installation plan for physical mounting, cable placement and labelling, connection checks, asset updates and handover. Scope depends on the supplied design, access approvals, equipment and rack readiness, power and cooling availability, and the technical tests assigned to GlobalITN. Rack-and-stack installation is a physical implementation workstream; facility design, logical network architecture and application configuration are separate unless agreed.

What is rack-and-stack installation?

Rack-and-stack is the physical installation of IT equipment into data-centre racks and the related connection and documentation activities defined for the project. “Rack” refers to mounting the equipment in the approved position; “stack” is commonly used for installing the equipment and associated components as a planned set. A project may include servers, storage, switches, patch panels or other hardware, but the exact devices and tasks should be listed before work begins.

Successful installation depends on accurate equipment dimensions and weights, rack-unit allocation, rail and mounting requirements, power and port schedules, cable paths, access windows and customer-approved labelling. The install team should follow the approved design and escalate conflicts such as unavailable rack space, mismatched equipment, missing rails, blocked access or unlabelled ports instead of making unapproved changes.

When is a rack-and-stack service useful?

Organisations may need rack-and-stack support when bringing new equipment into a colocation facility, adding capacity to an existing environment, refreshing servers or network devices, preparing a new rack or completing physical installation under a larger
data-centre deployment
. It is particularly useful when customer engineers, a data-centre operator, equipment suppliers and network teams need to work to one schedule and a common installation record.

If the equipment is moving from one data-centre site to another, the project also needs relocation planning, shutdown and transport coordination, destination readiness and recommissioning. Use the
Data Centre and Office Moves
page for that broader work. If the main requirement is designing or integrating LAN/WAN, routing, switching, firewall or wireless services, use

What can a rack-and-stack project include?

The confirmed scope may include:

  • ✓Reviewing the approved equipment list, rack elevations, port schedule and installation instructions.
  • ✓Checking site access, delivery details, rack availability, reserved rack units, mounting hardware and stated power and cooling readiness.
  • ✓Receiving or identifying equipment at the point and time assigned in the project plan; logistics and storage are separate unless included.
  • ✓Installing approved rails and mounting equipment in the customer-specified rack positions.
  • ✓Routing and connecting power and data cables according to the approved schedule, with agreed labels at both ends where required.
  • ✓Checking the physical installation against the equipment and port schedule and recording exceptions.
  • ✓Performing only the agreed physical and basic connectivity checks; configuration, firmware, security hardening and application testing need explicit scope.
  • ✓Updating the agreed equipment, rack-unit, serial-number, port or cable records and handing them to the customer or data-centre operator.

Power connection must follow the customer’s and facility’s approved procedures. Circuit capacity, redundancy, load balancing, cooling design and facility compliance remain with the designated facility and engineering authorities unless a specific assessment or design responsibility is contracted and supported by qualified personnel.

How does GlobalITN plan and deliver the installation?

1

1. Confirm the installation package

Before scheduling, the customer supplies the equipment list and manufacturer installation requirements, rack elevations, port and power schedules, access requirements, delivery instructions and named technical contacts. The parties confirm whether equipment is already onsite, who owns receiving and storage, which tasks require facility approval, and which checks are required for acceptance.

2

2. Verify site and rack readiness

The readiness check confirms that the assigned rack and rack units are available, the approved rails and mounting components are present, the site access window is booked, equipment can be handled safely under facility rules, and the required power and cooling information has been confirmed by the responsible party. Any mismatch is documented and referred to the customer or facility decision-maker.

3

3. Install to the approved layout

The engineering team installs the equipment in the approved rack positions and follows the agreed cable and labelling scheme. Changes to device position, power source, cable path or port assignment require approval from the named technical owner. The installer records serial numbers or other asset details where they are included in the project records.

4

4. Check, document and hand over

The team checks the physical installation against the approved schedule, performs the agreed connection checks, records exceptions and shares the handover information. Logical configuration, operating-system installation, firmware updates, security baselines, network routing and application validation are separate technical activities unless specifically included in the project scope.

What information is needed to quote rack-and-stack work?

A useful request includes the data-centre location and operator, number and type of devices, equipment arrival status, rack elevations, rack-unit allocation, equipment dimensions and weights where known, rail and mounting requirements, power and port schedules, cabling and labelling standards, access window, facility procedures, required checks and handover format. Include any constraints on delivery, staging, change approvals or customer engineer attendance. Incomplete information can be listed as a discovery item rather than treated as confirmed.

What does the customer or facility need to provide?

The customer or designated facility owner provides the approved rack layout, accurate equipment details, access authorization, facility work permits and safety instructions, power and cooling confirmation, reserved rack space, approved cable and port schedules, credentials or configuration owners where needed, and acceptance criteria. The customer also names the person who can resolve discrepancies and approve changes. GlobalITN records and escalates scope or readiness issues that prevent the installation from following the approved plan.

Installation records and handover

The handover should let the customer understand what was installed and how the result was checked. Depending on the agreed project, records can include the completed equipment list, rack-unit positions, serial numbers, cable labels or port connections, installation date, agreed checks, exceptions, photos where permitted by the facility, and open actions with owners. No data-centre security-sensitive photographs or facility details should be published or retained outside the customer’s approved process.

Frequently asked questions

Does rack-and-stack include network configuration?

Not automatically. Rack-and-stack normally covers physical placement and the agreed cabling and installation checks. VLANs, routing, switching configuration, firewall rules, addressing, firmware and application setup are additional activities that must be defined and approved.

Can GlobalITN install customer-supplied servers and switches?

The project can be scoped around customer-supplied equipment when the devices, mounting requirements, installation instructions, rack allocation, access and acceptance checks are provided and confirmed before the work window.

Does rack-and-stack include equipment delivery or storage?

Delivery, receiving, staging, secure storage, insurance and specialist transport must be assigned explicitly. The page should not imply these are included in every rack-and-stack engagement.

Can you work in an operating data centre?

Work in a live facility is subject to the operator’s access, safety, change and security procedures. The customer and facility owner must authorize the work, confirm the window and identify any restrictions before scheduling.

Is rack-and-stack part of a data-centre relocation?

It can be one workstream in a relocation, but relocation also involves source-site discovery, service dependencies, shutdown and move sequencing, transport arrangements, destination readiness and recommissioning. The broader service is described on the Data Centre and Office Moves page.

What is included in the handover?

The handover format is agreed before work starts. It may include the completed equipment and rack schedule, cable or port records, agreed physical checks, exceptions, approved photos where permitted, and open actions with named owners.

Request a rack-and-stack scope review

Send the equipment list, rack elevation, location and operator, access window, installation and cabling requirements, power and port schedules, equipment delivery status and desired handover records. GlobalITN can review the information and identify the readiness items needed to define the installation scope.
